At The PARC, we believe in our transformational recovery program that incorporates the mind, body and spirit.
Addictive Disease can be broken into 3 different categories;

1) Substance addictions – alcohol, narcotics (legal and illegal), over-eating (usually by trigger foods containing sugar or processes carbohydrates), cigarettes, etc

2) Behavioural addictions such as sex / pornography, gambling, gaming, internet / social media, bulimia.

3) Nurturing / process Addictions, such as love addiction, compulsive helping, anorexia, workaholism, shopping and exercise.

The PARC is capable of treating all of these different categories of addiction except anorexia.

We understand that Addictive Illness has 3 sides to it:

  • When someone with addictive illness begins an addictive substance, process or behaviour, they will often find it very difficult to stop before they have exhausted their resources – financial, physical, emotional, etc or fully acted out to their conclusion. They have a craving that manifests itself mentally and physically, that’s so powerful they are helpless to self-intervene. They have lost the power of self-control.
  • When they wake up the next day or soon after their previous binge, they will find themselves with obsessive thoughts speaking so loudly, that they find it impossible to stop themselves thinking about the acting out or using again, despite the knowledge of where this took them on the previous occasion. This voice becomes louder and louder, so much so that it becomes the sole dialogue in their mind. This consumes them so much that they begin to believe that the only way to shut down their voices is to feed them “just this once”. They will tell themselves “this time will be different”, “I can control it this time”, “I’ll have just one” or “let me act out just one time”. This internal dialogue is so overwhelming that they will feel “powerless” and lose the ability to choose not to.
  • Stuck between a rock and a hard place these people with addictive illness cannot stop themselves from doing what they do not want to be doing in the first place. So much so that it makes them mentally unwell to which the only way they know to self-medicate is to do the very thing that they know is making them sick, but which is also the only way they know to treat themselves. So they return to the very thing that’s harming or even slowly killing them, preferring instant relief over the knowledge of their own personal ineffectiveness or sad demise.Furthermore, as they become more immersed in this self-destructive cycle they become more and more self-obsessed, self-centred, greedy, selfish, angry and self-absorbed, pushing anyone and everyone away when they try to help, by lying, cheating, stealing, manipulating and taking advantage of anyone who gets close.
    We recognise this as the Spiritual disease that has taken them over. We describe this as a Spiritual Malady.Addiction can be summarised by selfishness.
    Recovery can be summarised by selflessness.
    We believe that selflessness is the purest form of spirituality and is the elixir to long lasting recovery.
    We believe that a Spiritual Life is one being of service to others.
    If we treat the Spiritual malady whilst maintaining abstinence or disciplined / structured control of a behaviour for a prolonged period of time we are able to introduce new concepts of living into someone’s psyche, helping them explore and further develop their own spirituality in order to maintain their recovery.

Therefore, we believe that discovering how to be useful to others is the keystone to anyone’s recovery.
Furthermore, because of the component of addiction involving ‘powerlessness’, we encourage our residents to search within themselves and to develop a new relationship with their own “Power Greater than themselves” and also a Power greater than their addiction. If someone is powerless, then they need a Power greater than themselves.

Our Program at The PARC is primarily a 12 Step Minnesota Model, delivered through talking therapies, various group therapy sessions and interactive assignments.

We supplement this with holistic therapies such as yoga and movement therapy (physical training, swimming, gym, etc) to get the body readjusted to a new regime that excites itself in an alternate fashion to how the body was previously self-medicating. One example would be that the fact is that physical motion changes someone’s emotion, so we teach our Residents to adopt movement as a source of self-medicine instead of their addictive substance, behaviour or process.

And we further support our treatment program with reflection, relaxation, mindfulness and other activities promoting mental wellness.

To summarize, by mixing our talking therapies with 12 Step realisations, alongside mindfulness, wellness and movement therapies, we are able to bring about a full and holistic positive change in someone. It’s been our experience that when the Resident takes this seriously and follows our instruction, they go on to have a wonderfully constructive and fulfilling life, that brings hope and help to all those around them, thus creating an ever-enlarging circle of positive influence.

The program at The PARC is designed to support people of faith or no faith, towards becoming better versions of themselves, without compromising their current beliefs or values.
